about

Consisting of two instrumental eps, In the Shadow of a Dying Light and In Light of the Dark, the idea for Dark Light emerged during the recording of early drafts of Cease to Desist, the intended debut album of Velvet Dynamite.

In the Shadow of a Dying Light is made up of instrumental soundscapes inspired by various composers and how their work has been used in film to support the plot rather than to act solely as a song played over a scene. It began as an early attempt to learn the craft of writing long instrumental pieces that gradually shift in mood and style in order to create a narrative for the listener. The goal of this was to allow the listener to piece together a story as if listening to a film score without visuals.

In Light of the Dark consists of three multi-layered instrumentals that started as experiments during the recording of an early version of Cease to Desist. However, while they worked well together, they did not fit into the overall style of the album so it was decided that they would be better suited as a separate entity that could build off the mood created by In the Shadow of a Dying Light.
